Fieldwork
My field experiences have taken me across the United States and abroad.
2025 Field Experiences (Recent!)
Guadalupe Mountains National Park (TX) — Summer 2025
Graduate-level field course during which I recorded and documented field observations, interpreted depositional environments, and synthesized geologic histories from multiple locations within the Delaware Basin in/around Guadalupe Mountains National Park for 1.5 weeks.
State College & Port Matilda (PA) — Spring 2025
Graduate-level course ‘Field Stratigraphy’ course focused on sedimentary field-data collection strategies, including making stratigraphic, assembling detailed lithological descriptions, constructing facies descriptions, and geological histories of both carbonate and clastic sections once per week over a semester-long period.

Me taking a look at the SW face of the Guadalupe Mountains on a (surprisingly!) clear day.
Excellent 3D view of a dune structure from inside the park!
Previous Field Experiences
Ostrovica Valley, Croatia — Fall 2023
Assisted Croatian Geological Survey with drilling, documenting, and sub-sectioning new cores at paleolake site for 1.5 weeks. This site serves as a key location for my research in the Mediterranean, and this experience highlighted for me the importance of seeing/experiencing field sites in person when possible. The wealth of knowledge I gained about the site, the local history, and culture were invaluable for shaping the trajectory of my research in this region.
Florida Keys (FL) — Spring 2022
Collected and analyzed first in-situ water chemistry measurements from Florida Keys ‘whiting’ event for 1 week as part of ‘Marine Biogeochemistry’ course.
Green Lake (NY) — Fall 2021
Assisted in collecting water and microbe samples from meromictic Green Lake and its freshwater thrombolites/stromatolites for 3 days.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park & Big Bend National Park (TX) — Summer 2019
Undergraduate field experience studying deep-time reef systems and the marine carbonate factory for 1.5 weeks.
Dillon & Augusta (MT) — Summer 2019
Building on previous year’s ‘Field Camp’ experience, conducted bedding measurements, analyzed lithologies, and fossil assemblages from increasingly complex geologic settings to construct geologic maps, subsurface projections, and stratigraphic columns for 2 weeks in/around the Dillon and Augusta regions of Montana as part of ‘Field Methods’ course.
Badlands National Park (SD) — Spring 2019
Undergraduate field experience exploring paleosols, their formation, and documenting the excellent fossil assemblages across the KT boundary within the park for 1 week.
Quincey (IL) — Spring 2019
Documented lithologies and fossil assemblages from local road cuts during 3-day trip as part of Dry Creek Conference to construct local stratigraphic column.
Iowa City (IA) — Spring 2019
Conducted bedding measurements and documented fossil assemblages for 1 day at local Devonian Fossil Gorge as part of ‘Structural Geology’ course.
Dillon (MT) — Summer 2018
Learned to conduct bedding measurements, analyze lithologies, and document fossil assemblages from sedimentary sections to construct geologic maps in/around the Dillon area for 2 weeks as part of ‘Field Camp’ course.
Johnson Shut-Ins & Elephant Rocks (MO) — Fall 2018
Undergraduate field experience focused on understanding deep-time volcanism in the Midwest and ore deposits characterizing southwest Missouri for 3 days.
Lake Cumberland (KY) — Fall 2017
Undergraduate field experience focused on understanding depositional byproducts (e.g., geodes) and fossil assemblages from Carboniferous deposits in/around Lake Cumberland.
Bryce Canyon National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park (UT), & Great Sand Dunes National Park (CO) — Summer 2017
Undergraduate field experience focused on exploring and understanding the geologic processes shaping National Parks of the American southwest while instilling basic geological field skills (e.g., camping, taking notes, making geologic drawings, constructing basic stratigraphic columns and maps) over the course of 2 weeks.
The rest of the 2023 Croatia coring team from the Hrvatski Geološki Institut (Croatian Geological Survey) discussing the best place to core.
Team members from the 2022 Florida Keys trip preparing to deploy sonde into ‘whiting’ event from our kayak.
Comparing notes with my mapping partner on the very first day of ‘Field Camp’ in 2018 in Dillon, MT. I first discovered my for field geology during the 2 summers I spent in Montana for my ‘Field Camp’ courses.
Our incredible camp site in the canyonlands of Moab, UT during Summer of 2017—my very first geology ‘field’ trip!
